The Advantage of the Biphasic Indentation Technique

Tissue Engineered Modification of
Viscoelastic Behavior in a Biomaterial

Figure 1.  Indentation curve and theoretical best fit to the biphasic theory for a SIS membrane in culture medium.  Note that the creep indentation response of the SIS material does not match the biphasic theory of cartilage very well.  This means that the SIS material does not have a biphasic response typical of natural cartilage.

Figure 2.  Indentation curve and theoretical best fit to the biphasic theory for a SIS membrane after being seeded with canine chondrocytes and implanted into the back of a mouse for 24 weeks.  Notice a much better match between the actual creep indentation curve and the theoretical biphasic curve.  This show that the tissue is behaving more like natural cartilage.
